Lo puesto

“Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you?”
the mourning dove chants her mantra for me
a spring morning unveils
with peculiar luminescence

in full bloom
intoxicating
the fragrance of binorama
imprints a path in my heart
making sure I can find
el camino de regreso a casa.
¡Algún día!

I am dressed in my daily blessings:
white cotton striped pants
white linen sleeveless shirt
lo puesto
meanwhile Carlos’ clothes
are already placed inside drawers
at a much more northern latitude.

My first sip of coffee
Is abruptly interrupted. The cell rings.
I felt his words: the estruendous of Pompa y Circunstancia
– ¿Hoy? I reply
Carlos’ reassuring voice and detailed instructions envelope me,

abundant silence,
exquisite pauses between his words,
unspoken sadness on both ends.

The short and heavy call ends.
Inhalo profundo.
Exhalo IN A SCREAM!

Dani’s fingers interlace mine;
a mother and son cue,
inviting each other
on a new adventure.

We leave our shoe prints on the fertile soil
as we drag our feet
towards the robust bugambilia
framing el portón.

Outside, our friend’s truck awaits
windshield decorated with tiny yellow, blue and white butterfly wings
whose destinies were abruptly interrupted.

Meandering hills towards Navojoa,
precious cardones and pitayas with wide open arms;
I insist it is an “hasta pronto”
though it may in fact be
an “adios.”

Dani’s childhood consisted of
exploring the mystic Sonoran desert roads. Not this time.
not today
a straight ten-hour-long bus ride to the border,
a three-hour-long uncharted “first class” flight to Dallas,
a four-hour-long yearned landing in Seattle today.

Carlos is here
He embraces us.

Doña Elena

Three Questions for Doña Elena

What inspired your choice of genre and/or form for your piece?

I joined a group of emigrants eager to embrace the moment each of us left our country and connect it with an artifact. I just let my memory take full speed.

What was your creative process?

My creative process consisted in a poetic allegory of a fell circle that concludes on my deep emotions.

What is the significance of this piece to you?

The significance of this piece is the impact it created upon the other participants who embrace the idea of being whole as immigrants regardless of the positions left behind. An invitation for the to embrace an abundance mind set.

Doña Elena is reborn each day as both a student and a teacher of subjects related to the energy of individual expression and collective consciousness. Art, her native language, contact with Mother Earth –Juya Annia– and yoga are paths that allow her to share these discoveries. Elena and her daughter ita share a painting legacy from the lineage expressed by their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother; all of them Elenas. Their transgenerational century-long artistic work focuses on the discovery that You are my other I; radiant beings, absorbing and reflecting light and energy with intense brilliance.

Next (Born in January, but it doesn’t make sense because it means I’m an Aquarius, but my sign is air, so do I flow or do I fly?) >
